Bundjalung
Language resources

Project Description

This project is a part of our own journey to re-learn Country, our Language group is one of many efforts in Northern rivers Bundjalung to revitalise, reconnect, and heal with our country knowledge again. Bundjalung nation is built up of several dialects and languages, this is our own local and personal interpretations collected into readable cards, accessible for the whole mob!

The group smiles warmly at the camera, highlighting the collaborative effort behind preserving and sharing Bundjalung language and cultural knowledge.

Our language mob!

Bundjalung Beach creatures 2025

Working in collaboration with local elders and their nonprofit language organisation, we have developed educational resources in an effort to help educate our future generations and local communities using Bundjalung Language and place names!

Illustrated Bundjalung educational card featuring an Osprey in flight, labelled with its Bundjalung name “Bihyin” and the English name “Osprey.” The bird is shown gliding with outstretched wings against a soft sky gradient, with a phonetic guide “(bee-een)” beneath. Part of the “Bundjalung Beach Creatures 2025” language resource project.
Bundjalung Elders and community members sit around a table during a language research session, reviewing animal reference photos, notes, and educational resources. One Elder writes in a notebook while others stand nearby, contributing to the collaborative process of reconnecting and documenting Bundjalung cultural knowledge.

CREATION PROCESS

Each animal is researched from our local native Eco-systems. Bundjalung language group, elders, and a language committee has worked together, match our local language to their natural environments. I had the pleasure of researching these sacred animals,
using photography and the help of the best site ever Initial and redraw these beautiful totems of our culture!
